Shopping in the Neretva and Dubrovnik area
Harbour Cafe in Ploce
There is just one shop in Komarna, a mini market just past Villa Bili on
your left hand side if you are heading for the beach. The house is painted
red so it is impossible to miss in a town where practically all the houses
are white.
The mini market sells all daily conveniences such as bread, vegetables, drinks, ice cream and sun cream and a few things that holiday makers always forget to bring. It opens at 7:00 and closes anywhere between 15:00 and 21:00 depending on the turnover. Sundays it often closes at 13:00.
If you are cooking yourself, it pays off to go to Neum, 8 km from Komarna. It is not in Croatia, but Bosnia- Herzegovina so remember your passports and insurance papers for the car. Bosnian taxes are lower so there is something to be saved on almost everything.
You can pay in Croatian Kuna everywhere in Neum. Do NOT use an ATM or exchange money in a bank. You will get Bosnian Convertible Marks! (A currency that was linked 1:1 with the former German Mark).
If you like (fairly) cheap DVD's and CD's and do not care much about copyright issues, Neum is also the place to go. Coming into Neum from the North there is a corner shop in the basement of the first road leading inland. You can find loads of games, music and movies here.
There is a big department store in Neum. It is on the inland side of the road by the bus stops. It has a large supermarket, clothes and a restaurant. It also contains sections of furniture, hardware and other stuff that is not of immediate interest to tourists (unless you want a glimpse of what the local taste is).
The area around the beach in Neum and Klek respectively is the places to go for beach wear and other holiday essentials. Snorkels, flippers and other items are not cheaper than in the UK.
There is also a couple of supermarkets in Klek. One of them are open all year. To find it from the central parking place keep right and walk past the old tower (kula) and you will see the shop that is open all year.
There are two roadside shops in Opuzen by the main road just opposite the INA petrol station. Here you can find everything for your daily need. If you come late in the day there may not be any bread left. The Butcher is open in the morning and again after 6 PM.
Inside the centre of Opuzen there are several small shops and a cosy atmosphere and some cafes at the square in front of the church where it is nice to sit and watch the locals.
If you want a greater choice of shops you should go to Metkovic. There are several big supermarkets and many small specialized shops. The three biggest supermarkets are all on the right side of the road leading into town from Opuzen. The first one you will arrive at is Lidl, then Konzum and finally Mercator on your right just before you reach the first traffic light in Metkovic. Mercator is also a mall with many small shops.
Last but certainly not least: Dubrovnik. Dubrovnik has everything and this
is the place to go hunting for souvenirs because the selection and the
competition - and thus the quality - is much greater than anywhere else
on the Southern coast.
Down by the harbor where the cruise ships are there is a big department store and up by the town hall and court building there are shopping malls.
When you do shop in Dubrovnik then remember to keep your receipts. You will pass through Neum (Bosnia) on the way home and there are a lot of import/ export regulations. We have never heard of them being enforced but there is no guarantee against a grumpy border guard.
